Houston man races to beat voter registration deadline after error leaves him off the rolls

Harris County election officials say they're working to fix the mistake that left one Houston man off the voter rolls just weeks before the Oct. 7 deadline

A Houston man is in a panic after discovering that he was mistakenly left off the voter rolls just weeks before the Oct. 7 registration deadline.

"I'm a registered voter, but when I went to check my status online, it said I wasn't registered," said the man, who asked not to be identified. "I'm really worried that I'm not going to be able to vote in the upcoming election."

The man said he has been registered to vote in Harris County for several years. He voted in the 2016 and 2018 elections without any problems.

But when he went to check his voter registration status online last week, he was shocked to see that he was not listed as a registered voter.

"I called the Harris County Elections Office and they told me that there was a discrepancy in my voter registration," the man said. "They said that they were working to fix the problem, but they couldn't guarantee that it would be resolved before the Oct. 7 deadline."

The man said he is worried that he will not be able to vote in the upcoming election if the problem is not fixed. He said he is especially concerned because the election is so close.

"I'm just hoping that the Elections Office can fix this problem as soon as possible," the man said. "I want to make sure that I can vote in the upcoming election."

Harris County election officials said they are aware of the problem and are working to fix it.

"We are working to resolve this issue as quickly as possible," said Leah Shah, a spokeswoman for the Harris County Elections Office. "We understand that this is a frustrating situation for voters, and we apologize for any inconvenience it may cause."

Shah said that voters who are experiencing this problem should contact the Harris County Elections Office at 713-755-6965.

The Oct. 7 voter registration deadline is approaching quickly. Voters who have not yet registered to vote are urged to do so as soon as possible.

There are several ways to register to vote in Harris County:

  • Online at VoteTexas.gov
