Gold Sanne Wevers

2016 Women's Olympic Balance Beam Winners

Gold: Sanne Wevers

Netherlands

Silver: Lauren Hernandez

USA

Bronze: Simone Biles

USA

Simone Biles, who had already won three gold medals in Rio, was the favorite to win the balance beam event. However, she made a small mistake on her dismount, which cost her the gold medal. Sanne Wevers of the Netherlands took home the gold, while Lauren Hernandez of the USA won the silver. Biles settled for the bronze.

The balance beam is one of the most difficult events in gymnastics. It requires a great deal of strength, flexibility, and balance. The gymnasts must perform a series of acrobatic moves on a narrow beam, which is only 4 inches wide. One small mistake can result in a fall, which can cost the gymnast the medal.

The 2016 Olympic balance beam competition was one of the most exciting events of the Games. The top three finishers were all within a tenth of a point of each other. Wevers' gold medal was the first for the Netherlands in women's gymnastics since 1928.
