Bodycam Footage Reveals Fatal Police Shooting of Homeless Man

Video Shows Tense Moments Leading to Ohio Officers' Use of Force

Milwaukee, WI - July 16, 2024

Newly released bodycam footage from Ohio police provides a glimpse into the moments preceding the fatal shooting of a homeless man during the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. The incident, which occurred on July 16, 2024, involved five Columbus police officers who were assisting with security efforts at the event.

According to police reports, the officers responded to a call about a man wielding two knives in the area. As they approached the suspect, who was identified as 35-year-old John Doe, they ordered him to drop the weapons. Doe allegedly refused and advanced towards the officers, prompting them to open fire.

The bodycam footage, which was obtained by USA TODAY NETWORK - Florida, shows the officers attempting to negotiate with Doe for several minutes before he advances with the knives. One officer can be heard shouting, "Drop the knives!" and using a Taser in an attempt to subdue Doe.

The footage then shows Doe charging at the officers, who fire multiple shots. Doe was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured.

The shooting has sparked an investigation by the Milwaukee Police Department and the Wisconsin Department of Justice. The Columbus Police Department has placed the five officers involved on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
