DHCP Vendor Class Identifier: MSFT 50 vs dhcpcd-5 5 6
Differences in Vendor Class Identifiers
DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) assigns IP addresses and other network settings to devices on a network. The Vendor Class Identifier (VCI) is a unique identifier that indicates the vendor and device type of the DHCP client requesting the IP address.
In the provided paragraph, we have two different VCI values:
*- MSFT 5 0: Windows computer
- dhcpcd-5 5 6: Android device
MSFT 50 Identifier
The MSFT 50 VCI is used by Windows computers from Windows 2000 onward. Prior to that, Windows computers used the traditional Client Vendor Name value. Additionally, some Windows-based devices may have an updated Client Vendor Name.
dhcpcd-5 5 6 Identifier
The dhcpcd-5 5 6 VCI is used by Android devices. It identifies the device as an Android device running the dhcpcd DHCP client.
DHCP Server and Client Interaction
When a DHCP client requests an IP address, it broadcasts a DHCP request message containing its VCI. DHCP servers or other machines on the network can receive and respond to this request if they are configured to send Vendor-specific Options to the client. Once the client receives its IP address, it joins the network and can communicate with other devices.
