Rwanda Remembers 30 Years Since Genocide
Remembrance Ceremonies Mark Anniversary of Tragic Event
Commemorations Led by President Kagame
KIGALI, Rwanda - Rwandans have come together to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the genocide that claimed the lives of an estimated 800,000 people. The ceremonies were led by President Paul Kagame, who called for unity and reconciliation.
On April 6, 1994, a plane carrying Rwandan President Juvenal Habyarimana and Burundian President Cyprien Ntaryamira was shot down, sparking the genocide. In the months that followed, militias and government forces systematically killed Tutsi people and moderate Hutus.
The genocide was finally stopped when the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) led by Kagame took control of the country. The RPF has been credited with bringing peace and stability to Rwanda, but the country continues to grapple with the legacy of the genocide.
During the commemoration ceremonies, Kagame urged Rwandans to forgive those responsible for the genocide. He also called for unity and reconciliation, saying, "We must learn to live together in peace and harmony."
